It’s hard to believe that this ‘’Best Gift House on the Prairie’’ had its humble beginnings 25 years ago! We actually started out as a group of seven farm women, who for the most part had gotten to know each other through Craft Sales that had been held for several years in my farm home out in the country. Those very successful sales prompted us into renting a permanent spot in Ponoka’s Mini Mall, but it wasn’t long before a lot with a very old decrepit looking house caught our eye not far from the Mall. That old greying house had seen many years of use being home to the Dave Jones family, and also the Dickau family. Built around the turn of the century, the old house, with lots of help and elbow grease from our husbands was restored to usefulness and once again looked loved. Over the last 25 years it’s had a few embellishments including several paints jobs – formerly known as the ‘’old blue’’ house, it is now the ‘’old red house.’’

The seven partners that began this great adventure were myself, Marlene Quiring [then Malcher] Elizabeth Backus[ now Cook], Myrna Dittberner [deceased], Joy Kraft [deceased], Joyce Hartmann, Rita Stotts and Sharon Dubitz. Together we spent many wonderful, fun and productive years, with all of us specializing in some craft or pottery that we were able to then sell through the shop. However, it was many years before we were actually able to pay ourselves a wage; our shop was truly a labor of love!

Since March, 2006, I have been running the shop on my own. Others moved on or away and I was in a position to stay…and so I did! We have had some lovely ladies help us in the shop along the way and you may meet some of them yourselves when you stop in.

So, please take this as your personal invitation, to join with us in this CELEBRATION of 25 YEARS in business in Ponoka as the WALRUS & CARPETNER, home décor and gift shop.

SATURDAY, JUNE 21, IS THE BIG DAY, and we will have 20 % off most in store stock! Some surprise specials, give-a-ways and refreshments!

We value your friendship and support and please let us give back to you on this special day!

P.S.. June 25th – July 1st, is our 78 annual famous Ponoka Stampede. We will be open all days of the Stampede including Sunday, June 29 and Tuesday, July 1st.
